Transformation lies at the heart of artistic practice. Art is related to artifice, in part meaning workmanship, the creation of something using craft and skill; in part meaning skill in cunning and trickery - the ability to create an impression or illusion of something by the process of transformation.

Badlands is a group exhibition that deals with themes of chaos, disorder, transformation, and the sublime in the work of four painters: Henry Tyrrell, Ollie Guyon, Emily Mary Barnett, and George Chapman. Each painter touches on their own idea of the sublime in their painting practice through the instability and unpredictability of painting.

A garage operates as conduit between an ad hoc and formal establishment. It is an informal parking space, a place to store clutter and a home for unwanted items. A garage is also a space of transition: to disassemble, repair, and renew items that have lost their worth. But there can be many representations of a space without the space itself. Paintings stand as part of the whole: the ongoing project to document the transitional, ephemeral nature of Joahnnesburg.
This Must Be the Place is a group exhibition featuring Abigail Harper, George Chapman, Ian Grose, Kitty Dorje and Leigh Tuckniss. Having few common thematic concerns and no narrative coherence, the exhibition, like the song from which it borrows its name, takes the non-sequitur as its framework and strategy.
